Energy management at AZ Alma

AZ Alma requested a detailed monitoring of the energy consumption and efficiency of their technical installations.
Energy management at AZ Alma

First, the various energy flows were mapped (energy monitoring). During the energy meetings, the reports were discussed and actions were determined to reduce CO2 emissions (energy management).

Thanks to open and transparent communication and the pooling of expertise of EEG and AZ Alma, action could be taken quickly and adjusted where necessary. This resulted in a reduction in energy costs of approximately €185,000 in 2022 and an expected saving of €440,000 (compared to 2020) in 2023. This saving was also achieved without additional investments.

Actions taken:

  • The combined heat and power generation (CHP) system did not work 24/7. Based on the reports, the financial and functional impact was worked out and actions were taken to make the CHP system work 24/7. Following a positive evaluation, the actions were implemented, followed up and adjusted.
  • Heat production: The control of the 5 boilers, 7 heat pumps and CHP was analysed and adjusted according to the actual demand. This reduced not only energy costs, but also CO2 emissions.
  • The operating hours of the ventilation system were examined and adapted to the actual demand and use of the rooms.

Ongoing measures:

  • Follow-up and adjustment of the charging and discharging of the Borehole Thermal Energy Storage (BTES) system and associated heat pump. To date, we have seen a doubling of the energy extracted from the BTES system.
  • Adjustment of room temperatures and optimisation of the take-up (cold and heat demands).
  • Central production temperature low temperature cooling to be increased in phases.
  • Adjustment of cooling USP and ALSB rooms, more free cooling (less active cooling).
